The California Energy Commission is proposing unnecessary regulations that are short-sighted and will damage the residential electronic systems industry in California. According to a Resolution Economics, LLC study, the CEC’s regulation would cost California $50 million a year in lost tax revenues and destroy 4,600 jobs. The CEC’s regulation would effectively ban the sale of 25% of current big screen TV models and 100% of plasma TVs larger than 60” in California.
CEDIA is working with the California Energy Commission and other stakeholders on efficiency standards for televisions. The coalition “Californians for Smart Energy” is holding a press conference outside the California Energy Commission to educate the public on the proposed CEC regulation that would damage the industry on Wednesday, August 12.

BACKGROUND
In December 2008, the California Energy Commission (CEC) proposed new regulations related to the power consumption of televisions sold in California. If adopted, these regulations will require manufacturers to meet a certain energy use limit in order to sell their televisions in California. The mandatory regulation would have a significant impact on the sale and installation of high-performance televisions and the business of the residential electronic systems industry.
