60 Seconds with CEDIA Volunteer Ray Holland

CEDIA
Feb 19, 2016

To show our appreciation for our volunteers, we turn the spotlight on them from time to time and learn what drives them day in and day out. Today, we meet volunteer Ray Holland of Artisan Systems.

A volunteer since 2014, Holland currently volunteers in support of CEDIA Training.

Why do you volunteer?

Having had many trials and tribulations throughout life, the CEDIA channel has provided me with a stable work environment for almost 15 years. I want to give back to the organization that has made my professional career possible.

What’s your favorite CEDIA memory?

My favorite memories are full of other hard-working CEDIA staff and volunteers and the fulfillment of seeing the next generation learn from us old dogs.

What’s your advice for new volunteers?

Soak it in, ask questions, give back. Learn from those around you and pass it on to the new individuals coming in. The circle of life, if you will.

What would be the title of your autobiography?

The Lion, the Witch and the Equipment Rack

What songs are on the soundtrack to your life?

Every song recorded by Aerosmith and Johnny Cash

If you could live anywhere, where would it be?

In a pool side Cabana at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Unlimited umbrella drinks, fabulous scenery, and occasionally chatting with celebrities.

What was the first thing you bought with your own money?

A toothbrush.

What would we find in your refrigerator right now?

Leftovers. I always cook too much food.

What is your favorite restaurant/color/sport/animal? Why?

  • Restaurant: Rao's, a family business for over 100 years.
  • Color: Green. I just like green.
  • Sport: Soccer. I played for 18 years and have coached for 10.
  • Animal: Dogs. Who doesn't like a puppy?

What phrase do you use the most?

Chance favors the prepared mind.

What is your all-time funniest prank?

Some co-workers (Navy) and I super glued $50.00 in pennies to another coworker while he was passed out after a long night of adult beverage consumption. When they were peeled off the next morning, the perfect circles of hair missing all over his body were more funny than anything I had ever seen before.
