60 Seconds with CEDIA Volunteer Theo Kalomirakis

Nov 16, 2015

To show our appreciation for our volunteers, we turn the spotlight on them from time to time and learn what drives them day in and day out. Today, we meet volunteer Theo Kalomirakis of Theo Kalomirakis Theaters in Brooklyn, NY.

A volunteer since 2004, Kalomirakis currently volunteers in support of CEDIA Panelists & Moderators, Content Task Force, training, and more.

Why do you volunteer?

Because this is my industry. I take pride for having played a small role in creating awareness about home theaters and I love giving what it takes to guarantee its continued success. It’s about education, excitement, and passion.

What’s your favorite CEDIA memory?

Attendees that are hungry to learn things they don’t know, and how to become successful in their fields. I love teaching but I love even more the fact that I learn a lot too by comparing notes with the integrators, sharing experiences with them, and encouraging them never to stop learning.

What’s your advice for new volunteers?

Work hard, be passionate, believe in helping others, and you will get back a lot more than you give.

What would be the title of your autobiography?

I Let My Passion Be My Guide

What songs are on the soundtrack to your life?

Popular songs from the '30s, '40s, and '50s. Anything by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, or composers like Jerome Kern, Frank Loesser, Jules Styne, etc.

If you could live anywhere, where would it be?

Brooklyn, New York. No question about that.

What was the first thing you bought with your own money?

Movie soundtracks on LP. I never had money because I would spend every penny I made to buy vinyl records by film composers such as Jerry Goldsmith, Leonard Bernstein, Max Steiner, Bernard Herman, etc.

What would we find in your refrigerator right now?

Milk, apples, hummus, eggs, broccoli, diet coke, feta cheese, and plenty of bottled water.

What is your favorite restaurant/color/sport/animal? Why?

Restaurant: A small Peruvian restaurant in Brooklyn called Surfish. Great food, lack of pretensions.
Color: Shades of beige and grey because I have used red too much in my theaters.
Sport: None. I don’t play any sports and I don’t enjoy watching them. I just like to exercise. That’s it.
Animal: Cats because they are affectionate but also independent.
