To show our appreciation for our volunteers, we turn the spotlight on them from time to time and learn what drives them day in and day out. Today, we meet volunteer Bjorn Jensen of WhyReboot in Miami, FL.
A volunteer since 2012, Bjorn currently volunteers in support of CEDIA IT/Networking Content Task Force, training, and more.
Why do you volunteer?
First of all, it’s a great way to network. I get to meet people passionate about the industry that are like-minded in that they want to give back. That’s probably the most rewarding aspect of it. I feel as if I get to make a difference by doing my little part in shaping the way the industry moves forward. Everyone that volunteers seems to share this same ideal and it’s wonderful.
What’s your favorite CEDIA memory?
One night a few of us were working late in the learning labs, drinking beer and hammering out some last-minute lab documents. We’d only just received the gear to write the labs on, so it was down to the night before to test things and make sure everything was ready for the next day. Apparently we weren’t supposed to bring beer in there, but we managed to smooth-talk the security guard into letting us bring it in.
What’s your advice for new volunteers?
Give it your all. There is a LOT of time in between shows, so as long as you don’t procrastinate TOO much, it’s relatively easy to give it everything you’ve got. If you do that, you’ll be fine and you’ll be a great asset to our community.
What would be the title of your autobiography? Making Your Own Luck
What songs are on the soundtrack to your life?
Sabotage by the Beastie Boys, 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky, For Those About to Rock by AC/DC
If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
A Copenhagen, Denmark that magically is always summer...or Hawaii.
What was the first thing you bought with your own money?
A compound bow that I mowed lawns, painted houses, washed dogs, etc., for. I was probably around 12 or 13 years old at the time. It felt great when I finally managed to scrape up enough to buy that thing. I still have it though it’s a little too small for me.
What would we find in your refrigerator right now?
What is your favorite restaurant/color/sport/animal? Why?
My favorite animal has to be the Rottweiler. Fiercely loyal and protective, incredibly smart yet dopey, always wanting to please, and always happy. A perfect companion. If only dogs lived as long as people...
What phrase do you use the most?
"Thanks for calling WhyReboot, this is Bjørn speaking."
What is your all-time funniest prank?
If I told you my all-time funniest prank I’d probably be booted out of CEDIA. So how about a CEDIA-related prank?
Last year, during the CEDIA volunteer cocktail hour, some friends of mine decided it was winding down and we should go elsewhere. On our way out of the reception, in a swanky hotel, we saw a group of people coming out of the elevator with blindfolds on. There were about 20 or more people in a sort of conga line, leading each other somewhere with only one person in the front leading the way with no blindfold. Everyone was dressed really well and it must have been some sort of game for a wedding party or something.
So, not about to miss a golden opportunity, I grabbed the hand of a person near the front of the line and turned them around. Now I’m leading about 15 or more people in the complete opposite direction unbeknownst to them, directly into the CEDIA volunteer reception. I wish I could say what happened next but we were already on our way down the stairs laughing hysterically. Hope they had a sense of humor.
