It seems a rarity these days to specify an entertainment system that doesn’t include an Xbox, PS3, Wii, or some combination of the three, and these game systems aren’t just for playing around anymore. With advanced media sharing features, access to streaming entertainment services, and even a second screen gateway for mobile devices, game consoles have become an all-in-one source. With the recent announcements by Sony regarding the PS4 and Microsoft’s upcoming May 21st announcement for their new system, the custom channel must be prepared to deal with the next generation systems. While much remains a mystery as to each systems' components, it seems likely to include Ultra-HD/4K content and high bitrate content which will require new considerations for the systems.
What is also clear is that these products will be much more than just a traditional gaming system, and will most likely be used as a gateway to the home for Ultra-HD/4K movies, streaming content and voice and gesture recognition. While some may dismiss these announcements as stand-alone products, it seems clear that Home Technology Professionals will have to cope with their impact on the industry.
