Core vs. Elective Courses – What is the difference?
Ever wonder what the number and letters mean before
the title of a class? For example: what’s the difference
between ESB099 and ESB401? There are two types of education
offered at CEDIA education events: CEDIA University Core
Courses and electives.
CEDIA University Core Courses are offered across the five colleges and are vital steps to building a knowledge base that enables one to work more effectively. Core courses are built by subject matter experts, CEDIA volunteers, professional instructional design firms, and staff. The objective, fact-based courses are developed using university education standards. All core courses carry Continuing Education Units (CEUs) with typical values range from 1.5 to 3 units depending on each course.
Electives are educational courses outside the graduated hierarchy of CEDIA University curriculum. These courses often allow the instructor to relate personal experiences, thoughts, ideas, and opinions with students. CEDIA University is not responsible for the content or its delivery in the elective offerings; the instructors hold that responsibility.
