Government Affairs


CEDIA’s government affairs efforts are designed to support members and ensure that their abilities to own and operate their businesses are not impeded upon.

Our mission is to influence public policy to protect CEDIA members, the electronics industry, and consumers. 

The association achieves this mission by developing, monitoring and disseminating information regarding legislative and regulatory issues; developing and implementing public policy strategies; and driving participation at a grassroots level.

Key Issues

 

  • State Licensing: The technology-based skills needed to work on residential electronic systems have become more specialized. CEDIA works to ensure fair and equitable licensing is implemented and properly represents the scope of work of home technology professionals.  
  • Security/Home Automation Licensing: Many CEDIA members are home technology professionals with bona fide qualifications and experience with home automation systems. With technology converging, security systems now have home automation capabilities. CEDIA works to ensure its members are not required to meet the additional security licensing requirements for all the work a home technology professional does – not just the work related to security systems.
  • Electronic Waste: More and more states are drafting legislation for the environment-friendly disposal of electronic waste. View CEDIA’s position paper on e-waste (PDF). 
  • Energy Efficiency Standards for Televisions: States are introducing legislation requiring energy efficiency standards for televisions. CEDIA urges state legislatures to recognize and further support the programs already in place, such as ENERGY STAR and our members’ continued work toward energy efficiency solutions.

  • North American Industry Classification System (NAICS): The NAICS is the standard used by the federal statistical agencies in classifying business establishments for the purpose of collecting, analyzing, and publishing statistical data related to the U.S. business economy. NAICS has replaced the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system.
