The Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association, or CEDIA, is recognised as the leading international trade association whose members specialise in the planning, design and installation of electronic systems. These typically include media rooms, single or multi-room entertainment systems, home automation and communication systems and integrated whole house sub-systems that provide control of entertainment, lighting, security and HVAC systems among others.

CEDIA was founded in the U.S. in September 1989 and has more than 1800 member companies worldwide. In 1994 Australasia became the first international chapter and is recognised as one of its greatest successes.

CEDIA members are established, insured businesses with bona fide qualifications and experience in this specialised field. Our members include Residential Electronic Systems Contractors, manufacturers, importers and distributors, consultants and affiliates. Custom installation is a new, rapidly growing field, which is not widely known outside the consumer electronics industry. Among consumers, there is little awareness or appreciation for the specialised knowledge and skills of the custom Residential Electronic Systems Contractor. Builders and home designers are better informed, but most are not aware of the breadth of custom installation services, or of all they and their clients stand to gain by using custom installers.

CEDIA's purpose is to build recognition and acceptance for this specialised field and to speak up for its interests in addressing industry, government and the marketplace.

Consumers can obtain referrals through CEDIA to find capable, reputable, professional, qualified design or installation contractors to counsel them and work in their homes or businesses.

Custom Installers are identified as a professional resource by consumers, builders, architects, and interior designers. Through CEDIA's ongoing commitment to education and training, they can provide better training for their staff. They have access to data and materials for managing their businesses and marketing their services. They have an open line of communication to manufacturers, industry officials and colleagues for solving problems and exchanging information.

Manufacturers know that equipment specified, installed and services by members will satisfy consumers leading to enthusiastic referrals and the further growth of the industry. They are given feedback that helps them create products that perform better, are easier to install and satisfy more and changing consumer demands.
